Odessa, Texas/August 10, 2025-The Odessa Police Department held their Annual Back To School Bash at McKInney Park on Saturday, August 9th. Families came out to see the SWAT Armored vehicles, the OPD Crime Scene Unit and other hardware. Children enjoyed the various activites and Jumpers and recieved school supplies for the new school year.

The OPD Back To School Bash featured vendors including Medical Center Hospital, AT&T, H.E.B. and others providing information to families and goodie bags to the kids.

First Day of School for Students at the New Idea Lopez Public School

Odessa, Texas/August 8, 2025-The new IDEA Lopez Public School on 5th street near Harless Street opened its doors to new students. The School Principal, teachers and staff welcomed parent and students to the first day of school via a red-carpet ceremony.

The school session on Thursday and Friday were only half-day of classes. The school day focused on procedures, student’s responsibilities at the school while learning the core subjects.

Educators at IDEA LOPEZ want students to have fun learning the core subjects they need to have a successful educational experience. They want students to learn as much as possible and be able to move forward in their academic careers.

Team Odessa Back-to-School Free Fish Fry Community Event

On Monday evening, August 4th a newly formed organization called TEAM ODESSA held a Back to School Fish Fry event. This was a free event for residents of Odessa to meet City and County Officials in an informal setting.

Odessa, Texas/August 6, 2025-Odessa City Councilman District 1 Eddie Mitchell along with representatives of LULAC and Hispanic Heritage of Odessa and other organizations came out to support the 1st Annual TEAM ODESSA Event  hosted by Big Daddy’s Grill and Bar where it was estimated that over 300 people attended the community event.

Ector County ISD Convocation 2025 at the Ector County Coliseum

Odessa, Texas/August 6, 2025-The Ector County ISD recently held its annual Convocation at the Ector County Coliseum. The Convocation is a teacher pep-rally to get faculty and staff ready for the new school year. The program kicked off with the faculty choir singing the National Anthem followed a presentation by Dr. Keeley Boyer, Superintendent of Schools on goals and expectations.

Arleen Sanchez, a second-year 10th grade chemistry teacher at Odessa Collegiate Academy and a graduate of Ector County ISD is excited to be able to be back teaching young students.

Dr. Jose Hernandez, a former NASA astronaut who grew up in a family of migrant workers; the persistence of one of his teachers changed the course of his life.

Dedication to Freedom-a Life Size Replica of The Battle Of Iwo Jima Monument at Music City Mall

Odessa, Texas/August 2, 2025-Music City Mall held a special ceremony revealing a special monument called Dedication to Freedom. Maggie Jones has the story.
Mall visitors gathered at the Dillards entrance to view the unveiling a life-sized replica of the Battle of Iwo Jima statue. The momument took over a year to complete and estimated cost of several thousands of dollars. The purpose of the replica is to remind the younger generations of the sacrafice the men and women of the armed forces paid in World War 2 to keep freedom in the United States.

Sacred and special music was performed in memorium of the Battle of Iwo Jima monument ceremony.
Visitors to Music City Mall are encouraged to stop by and see a replica of thefamous and historic Battle of Iwo Jima monument and take time to read the special plaque.

Odessa Chamber of Commerce and Cheveron 2025 New Teacher Welcome

Odessa, Texas/July 31, 2025-The Odessa Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Chevron held the 2025 Ector County ISD New Teacher Welcome Fair at the MCM Grande Hotel Fund Dome. New teachers have the opportunity to connect with the community and learn about local resources from local businesses.

Over 250 new teachers from across the state of Texas and from the U.S. as well as international teachers will be serving the students of the ECISD school district.
