Man On A Roof is Taken Into Custody by Odessa Police

Odessa, Texas/September 18, 2024-On Tuesday, September 17th, Odessa Police responded to the 700 block of N. Washington in reference to a check welfare. Dispatch advised an unknown male was on top of the complainant’s roof. The subject on the roof was later identified as 37-year-old Christian Herrada. Investigation revealed that Herrada had no right to be on the roof and had caused damage to an electric pole and wiring.

Herrada eventually came down from the roof and was placed into custody. Based on the facts and circumstances presented during the investigation, Herrada was charged with two counts of Criminal Trespass “Misdemeanor A”, Resisting Arrest “Misdemeanor A”, and Criminal Mischief “Misdemeanor B”.

Nimitz Middle School Goes into Lockdown

Odessa, Texas/September 13, 2024-Nimitz Middle School went into lockdown around mid-morning on Friday, September 13th. Police Chief Mike Gerek said that officers were going room to room. ECISD Police along with Odessa Police were actively involved in the investigation. Postings on social media added to the confusion creating panic among students and parents. 

Around 2pm, Ector County ISD lifted the lockdown at Nimitz Middle School and parents were allowed to pick their children. Police have found no evidence of a shooter nor a weapon. And are investigating this as a hoax intended to cause panic at the school. 

There is an unofficial report that a student was arrested for yelling “GUN” at the school.

6th Annual First Responder Breakfast Hosted By La Margarita Mexican Food Restaurant

Odessa, Texas/September 5, 2024-La Margarita Mexican Food Restaurant hosted the 6th Annual First Responder Breakfast. The Odessa Police Department, Ector County Sheriff’s Office, Odessa Fire Rescue and the Texas Department of Public Safety West Texas Region along with the Ector County DA’s Office enjoyed a Mexican Style breakfast that included: scrambled eggs, papas, sausage and bacon and spicy Chile Verde.

LULAC & Hispanic Heritage of Odessa-“Breakfast With A Champion” Honoring Police Chief Michael Gerke

Odessa, Texas/August 25, 2024-Hispanic Heritage of Odessa, LULAC and members of the Black Cultural Council of Odessa along with guests and Odessa City Council members celebrated “Breakfast With A Champion” honoring Police Chief Michael Gerke.

Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke presented a discussion of the threat of Fentanyl in Odessa and in Ector County and the laws that have been created by the Texas State Legislature to punish those that distribute and cause the death of someone knowingly or unknowingly ingesting Fentanyl.

NTSB and the FAA Investigating a Plane Crash in North Odessa Near Schlemeyer Airfield

Odessa, Texas/August 20, 2024-On Tuesday, August 20th at approximately 7am Odessa Fire Rescue responded to a major fire within the 6800 block Alderfer Ave. A small plane that took off from Schlemeyer Field was flying southbound at a low altitude over Yukon Rd., hit power lines on Yukon Rd., and also hitting and damaging a business also on Yukon Rd. The plane went down in the ally in the area of Alderfer Ave and Stevens Ave. Several trailer homes were fully engulfed. OFR rescued a female from a burning trailer home and was transported to a local hospital. 

The aircraft, a 1991 Cessna 550 piloted by Joseph Vincent Summa, a 48 years of age male of Bellaire, Texas. The passenger identified as Joleen Cavaretta Weatherly, a 49 years of age female of Orange, Texas were both pronounced deceased at the scene. The NTSB and the FAA were notified and have begun their investigation. More information as it becomes available.
