Hispanic Heritage of Odessa Recognizing Hispanic Medical Professionals

Several local Hispanic doctors and medical support personnel and Home Healthcare agencies were recognized.

City of Odessa Held Special Memorial Wall Ceremony

Odessa, Texas/October 13, 2023-The City of Odessa held a special ceremony in the east parking lot of City Hall to honor those employees who have served the City of Odessa. A past Mayor and City Council administration that included then Councilman Javier Joven came up with the idea to create a memorial wall to honor those city employees that have since passed away.

Families of employees that served the City of Odessa came to the ceremony as far as Houston. Mayor Javier Joven plans to continue the tradition of a remembrance ceremony.

National Night Out 2023-First Presbyterian Church/Iglesia De Amor Church

Odessa, Texas/September 5, 2023-Several churches, neighborhoods, apartment complexes and organizations celebrated the 2023 National Night Out on Tuesday, September 3rd despite the early afternoon stormy weather. 

The Odessa Police Department and Odessa Fire Rescue visited with residents at The First Presbyterian Church located at 1401 N. Sam Houston Ave.

Residents who live around or near the Church enjoyed Hot Dogs, Chips and Drinks. Kids got to see the first responder vehicles up-close.

Iglesia de Amor Church on 1609 W. 10th, hosted National Night at the storefront church location. Hispanic residents who live near the church came out to see the Crime Scene Mobile Lab, OPD Units and the Odessa Fire Rescue Fire Trucks and Ambulance.

Iglesia De Amor Church pastors believe in the importance of having a good relationship with local law enforcement and first responders to bring the community together.

Benito & Teresa Ramos Ector County Library Exhibit/Hispanic Heritage Month Festivities

Odessa, Texas/October 2, 2023-Hispanic Heritage Month is currently underway with a wide variety of activities now through October 15th. The Ector County Library hosted a sneak peek of the life of Benito and Teresa Ramos. The small display features tools used for carpentry and Teresa’s artwork. Benito and Teresa Ramos were decades-long residents of Odessa living on the south side on the infamous Magnolia Street.

The descendants of Benito and Teresa Ramos want visitors who come to the exhibit to get a snapshot of the life and times, struggles and successes of the Ramos Family.

Long time southside of Odessa residents were treated to a luncheon hosted by Ajuua’s Mexican Food Restaurant and several home healthcare medical companies. Residents talked about life in their early years living in Odessa.

The festivities continued into the night at Dos Amigos with food, drinks and with Mariachis and other entertainment. Mayor Javier Joven presented El Grito De Independencia-the beginning of Mexico Independence on September 15th.

Odessa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Host 5K Color Run

Odessa, Texas/September 30, 2023-The Odessa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce held the 5K Color Run at McKinney Park. Families, Children of all ages participated in this fun event.

Over 100 people came out to the 5K Color Run.

The Odessa Police Department and Food trucks were at the event as well as vendors that included banking, real estate companies, restaurants and non-profit organizations providing information to families.

Odessa College 2023 Car Show/Elijah Barrera Memorial Scholarship

Odessa, Texas/September 24, 2023-On Saturday, September 23rd, Odessa College presented the 2023 Car Show at the OC Sewel Auto Tech. Over 130 vehicles were on display from vintage original to modern muscle and trucks including imports and exotics.

The Sewell Family of Companies and Rogers Ford of Midland worked together to cover the costs of the Car Show. Proceeds from the Odessa College 2023 Car Show will go to the Elijah Barrera Memorial Scholarship.

Elijah Barrera was a member of the first Automotive Student Service Education Training program also known as ASSET and was employed by Sewell Ford. He graduated on a Friday of May of 2022 and passed away the following Sunday, as a result of a motorcycle crash.

During the Car Show, Sewell Ford announced a donation of a brand-new E-Transit to the auto tech program to help students in the education of Electric vehicles.

The Odessa College 2023 Car Show featured the FAB LAB, the OC Cheerleaders, and Odessa Fire Rescue. Visitors to the show enjoyed hot dogs and drinks.
