DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS(102621)-RED RIBBON CEREMONY AT ECTOR COUNTY ISD

Odessa, Texas/October 26, 2021-Ector County ISD held it’s annual Red Ribbon Week-a drug prevention awareness progaram. This program educates school age children of the dangers of drug use and addiction. Red Ribbon Week is also a memorium of DEA Special Agent Enrique “KiKi” Camarena, who was tortured and killed by Mexico’s biggest marijuana and cocaine traffickers in 1985.

The Ector County Sheriff’s Office is on the front lines with other law enforcement agencies, combating drug trafficking.

Ector County ISD acknowledges, that drugs are in the school population. The school district has two K-9s that help patrol schools to assist in drug prevention.

Odessa, Texas/October 25, 2021-The University of Texas of the Permian Basin held the official grand opening and ribbon cutting  ceremony of the D. KIRK EDWARDS HUMAN PERFORMANCE CENTER on Friday, October 22nd. This facility houses the next generation of healthcare professionals, social workers, community health leaders and scientists.

Several years ago Kirk Edwards and then University of the Permian Basin president David Watts began the process of establishing a UTPB football team to help with increase university enrollment and to help the Odessa-Midland community grow.

The 37 million dollar, 63,717 square foot state-of-the-art facility named after Kirk Edwards, a long-time UT Permian Basin donor and supporter features several labs including atheletic training education, exercise, biomechanics and other features.

The athletic wing of the D. Kirk Edwards Human Performance Center has a 150 seat auditorium/team meeting room, locker rooms for football and women’s soccer.

DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS(102321)-CITY OF ODESSA & 1ST RESPONDERS TRUNK OR TREAT EVENT

Odessa, Texas/October 23, 2021-The City of Odessa, The Odessa Police Department, The Ector County Sheriff’s Office and Odessa Fire Rescue hosted a Trunk or Treat event for the entire family Saturday morning, October 23rd, at the Odessa City Hall and First Baptist Church parking lot. TxDot and other agencies handed out candy and provided information to families on safety and services.

The Ector County Sheriff’s Office provide candy, coloring books and t-shirts to children attending the event. Sheriff Mike Griffis said that events like Trunk or Treat brings the community together.

Children, moms and dads’ got to see the Odessa Police Department’s SWAT Team vehicles and hardware.

Odessa, Texas/October 22, 2021-Dawn Weaks, pastor at Connection Christian Church in Odessa is a breast cancer survivor. Pastor Weaks describes her journey from her cancer diagnosis to recovery from breast cancer.

DRB MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS DIGITAL NEWS(102121)-NEW OBSERVATORY AND PLANETARIUM AT OHS RIBBON CUTTING

Odessa, Texas/October 21, 2021-Ector County ISD hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at Odessa High School to unveil the new planetarium.

In 1969, Odessa High School was part of the space movement when Apollo 11’s lunar module landed on the moon. Around that year a science wing was added to OHS and an observatory was built on top of the high school’s roof.

After several years post 1969 the telescopes stopped working and were out of commission and the observatory was closed. In 2020 the observatory was rediscovered by workers working on the roof at Odessa High School.

The Innovation Department at ECISD, Odessa High School, the Education Foundation, the Astronomy Club and Chevron began the process of seeking funding for renovations for the forgotten time capsule.

The observatory will made available to students very soon, and the planetarium portion of the observatory will be used not only for astronomy, but for instruction in other core subjects as well as.
