SKILLSUSA Texas District 2 Competition Hosted by Odessa College

Odessa, Texas/February 18, 2023-Odessa College hosted the SKILLSUSA District 2 Competition on Friday, February 17th. This year brings area culinary students together to compete in the Culinary, Commercial Baking, and Restaurant Services.

Approximately 130 Students from Ector County Advanced Technical Education Center Abilene, Presidio, Grand Falls Royalty, Kermit and Big Spring participated in the competition

Welding students competed in four welding competitions for the opportunity to compete in the State SKILLSUSA Competition and on to the Nationals.

2nd Annual Maker Show Closing Reception at Odessa College-DRB Media Communications Digital News

Odessa, Texas/February 16, 2023-Odessa College recently held the 2nd Annual Maker Show at the Phillips-Goff Gallery in Sedate Hall, presented by the Fab Lab Permian Basin located at OC. The exhibit showcased users and items of the Fab Lab.

27 individuals and one student from the University of North Texas submitted their work in several categories that included: engineering, art, mixed media, kids and best machine use.

Those that attended the 2nd Annual Maker Show were able to vote in the People’s Choice by placing a blue sticker on their favorite art piece. The winner of the People’s Choice was “Connecting the Past to Now” created by Nathaniel Jordan.

Former U.S. Congresswoman Texas District 34, Mayra Flores Speaks at ECRW Club Luncheon

Odessa, Texas/February 15, 2023-The Ector County Republican Women held its February meeting at the Odessa Country Club. This month’s featured speaker was Mayra Flores, former U.S. Congresswoman, Texas District 34.

Mayra Flores immigrated from Mexico with her family at the age of 6. Ms. Flores says she understands why people from other countries want to come to the United States.

According to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, Mexico and China are the primary source countries trafficking fentanyl to the youth in the United States.

The New Odessa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Introduces New Board of Directors

Odessa, Texas/February 13, 2023-The Odessa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce recently held a “meet and greet” of the new OHCC board members at La Margarita Mexican Food Restaurant. The board outlined goals for 2023.

Paul Garza, the former President of the Hispanic Chamber was arrested in 2022 for allegedly misappropriating Chamber funds, causing a mistrust of the OHCC. The Odessa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is re-organizing and building its membership under the leadership of Entrepreneur and business owner Savanah Morales.

Zavala Elementary/Keep Odessa Beautiful/Permian Basin Master Gardners Plan Veggie Garden

Odessa, Texas/February 12, 2023-Ector County ISD’s Zavala Elementary has an educational choice program called Careers and Communities, where students learn about different career paths. A career path that was discussed was in the field of nutrition.

Zavala Elementary has selected two areas on campus to create the garden. The issue is the amount of sunlight in these two shaded locations.

The goal is to educate students on planting a garden.  

Potatos, carrots, squash, tomatos herbs and other vegetables are being considered for the garden.

Keep Odessa Beautiful has been working on this project with Zavala Elementary for two years. The goal is to educate children on conservation and repurposing materials in the creation of the garden.

Cavazos Elementary is the next school Keep Odessa Beautiful and the Master Gardeners will be partnering up with in the beautification of the campus with a garden.

Odessa Police Academy Session 25 Firearms Training-DRB Media Communications Digital News

The Odessa Police Academy 25 held firearms training on Thursday, February 9th at the OPD-OFR Training Center in South Odessa. Recruits learned the operation of firearms and firearm safety. During the weeklong training, recruits including recruits from the Midland County Sheriff’s Office trained with pistol, long rifle and AR-15 exercises.

In previous OPA Academies some recruits had experience shooting guns, and forming bad habits. Other recruits never handled or fired a weapon.

During the week of firearms training, recruits trained on various drills that included using vehicles as cover while shooting at targets.
