The Salvation Army in Odessa Officially Reopens Mabee Red Shield Lodge

Odessa, Texas/June 14, 2024-The Salvation Army in Odessa held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the official reopening of the Shelter. The Salvation Army Shelter has been open and operating since December 2023.

In years past the Salvation Army required those seeking shelter during dangerous summer and winter weather to provide identification. Now, the Salvation Army welcomes anyone needing help without an ID.

The Salvation Army shelter in Odessa has 54 beds and can provide cots for overflow, and partners with other nonprofit agencies to provide shelter for families.

The City of Odessa has made a commitment to help the Salvation Army with the growing homeless population by providing funding through Community Development Block Grants.

Midland Animal Services New Pet Food Pantry Program to Keep Pets at Pet Owners Home

Midland, Texas/June 12, 2024-The City of Midland Animal Services will be providing a food pantry for pets, and it is scheduled to begin on Thursday, June 13th, during regular business hours. The pet food pantry is a first come first serve program and is funded through donations.

Officers with Midland Animal Services will be able to provide pet food to elderly pet owners that are not able to make the trip to the Animal Services location.

The Midland Animal Services provides high quality pet food for those dogs and cats that are at the shelter. Various types and brands of pet food will be available at the pet food pantry that pet owners can choose from.

Phillips 66 Awards $115,000 to Odessa Family YMCA, Odessa College and Midland YMCA for Water Safety Programs

 

Odessa, Texas/June 9, 2024-Phillips 66 recently provided funds totaling $115,000 to the Odessa Family YMCA, Odessa College and the Midland Family for free swim lessons and water safety programs. Phillips 66 supports programs in the communities that they work and live in.

The Midland YMCA received $40,000 from the Pillips 66 $115,000 grant which will be used to springboard their Safety Around Water program, that is made available to all families of all ages. This program teaches families how to be safe around any body of water.

Odessa College received $25,000 from the $115,000 Phillips 66 grant to help with programs that would be difficult for the college to acquire funding for. The funding will allow free swim safety lessons for the community regardless of economic status.

The Odessa Family YMCA was awarded $50,000 that will go towards the new pool Phillips 66 program that will include: safety around water presentation and training. The program is planned to begin in Fall.

The Odessa Family YMCA is offering free swim lessons vouchers. Individuals must attend the hour and a half Safety Around Water class to be eligible for the swim lesson voucher.

Odessa Police Investigating Deadly Crash, One Person Deceased

Odessa, Texas/June 7, 2024-On Friday, morning, June 7th, at approximately 9:35am Odessa Police and Odessa Fire Rescue responded to a deadly crash in the 4800 block of East University. 

The investigation revealed that a Dodge Challenger and a Honda Accord were the two vehicles involved in the crash. The investigation further revealed that the driver and passengers were on a test drive of the Dodge Challenger that was heading east on University. The Honda Accord was traveling westbound and was going to turn south onto Oakwood when the crash occurred. The driver of the Honda Accord was ejected from the vehicle and was deceased at the scene. 

The driver and passengers in the Dodge Challenger were taken to Medical Center Hospital with unknow injuries. 

The investigation of this deadly crash is ongoing

Cultural Celebrations Council and City of Odessa Welcomes Navarro Group a Cultural Events Planner

Odessa, Texas/June 4, 2024-Recently, The City of Odessa along with the Odessa Chamber of Commerce and Chamber Ambassadors welcomed the Houston based Navarro Group. The special program introduced the Cultural Celebrations Council of Odessa, a special events organization that has partnered with the City of Odessa.

The Cultural Celebrations Council of Odessa revealed new logos and a rebranding of the Christmas parade and the Firecracker Fandango.

The goal of the Navarro Group is preserving the Mexican traditions and culture through fun family events like parades and other live entertainment, that will also include Dia De Los Muertos Parade and Festival.

City of Odessa Mayor Joven and the City Council had approved $50 thousand dollars to the Navarro Group to bring a higher standard of cultural entertainment.

Ector County Courthouse Closes Again Due To Flooding

Odessa, Texas/June 3, 2024-On Monday morning, June 3rd, at approximately 10am, employees, Judges and staff evacuated the Ector County Courthouse due to a major water break within the building. The water damage affected the County Clerk’s Office and the basement where an archive of records is stored.

Visitors to the courthouse that had pending court appointments and other business were turned away. During the month of February 2023, the Ector County Courthouse experienced a water break that affected offices, courtrooms and other important locations within the aging building.

Due to the poor infrastructure and old turn-off valves the aging water pipes  gave way to water pipe ruptures.

It is unknown what the cost of the damage is or how much money the County lost from business transactions due to the closing of the Courthouse. Ector County Judge Dustin Fawcett said that the Courthouse should be open for business Tuesday morning, June 4th at 8am.
