Ector County ISD Holds School Bond Proposal Town Hall Meeting at Travis Elementary

Odessa, Texas/August 4, 2023-Ector County ISD held a Town Hall meeting at Jordan Elementary in North Odessa and at Travis Elementary in South Odessa.  Residents heard a presentation by Scott Muri Superintend of Schools at ECISD on a $427 million dollar plus bond proposal. Chris Stanley, President of the Board of Trustees, Delma Abalos and other school officials also provided information on the needs of the school district.

Scott Muri has heard from residents of Odessa and Ector County who are in favor of the bond proposal. The Permian Basin Strategic Partnership has agreed to add more funding if the bond proposal is passed.

An issue that was brought up during the town hall meeting was the increase in property taxes.

Natividad Armendariz added that if the School Bond Proposal does not pass, residents will pay more in taxes on any future school bond proposals.

The more than $427 million dollar school bond proposal includes a new middle school, maintenance and repairs, transportation, fine arts, athletics, transition learning Center, Technology Department and Agriculture. The next town hall will be on August 7th at 6:00pm at West Elementary and Permian High School.

Odessa Chamber of Commerce and Chevron Welcomes New Teachers for the 2023-2024 ECISD School Year

Odessa, Texas/August 1, 2023-The Odessa Chamber of Commerce along with Chevron and other sponsors held the 8th annual 2023-2024 New Teacher Welcome for Ector County ISD. Over 60 businesses, banks, various church representatives and other organizations helped welcome the new educators.

Erica Belanger is a former banker, and now a first-year 4th grade teacher at Burnett Elementary. She’s excited about being able to bring her real-life experiences as a banker to the classroom to help her students succeed.

At the beginning of the week, Ector County ISD held the New Teacher University. This is ECISD’s orientation for new teachers that are new to the school district.

Approximately 200 international teachers from 26 countries were welcomed at the Odessa Chamber of Commerce-Chevron reception at the MCM ELEGANTE HOTEL & FUNDOME.

Adaptive Sports Athletes Playing at the Wheelchair Softball World Series in Chicago, Illinois

Odessa, Texas/August 1, 2023-Adam Lucio is a tennis coach at Odessa College and an Adaptive Sports Athlete. He was injured at 5 months and got his first wheelchair at the age of 4. Today, Adam is involved in several sports: Baseball, Basketball and football.

Adam Lucio and his teammate Edward Gonzales are currently playing at the Wheelchair Softball World Series in Chicago with the Houston Hot Wheels, part of the National Wheelchair Softball Federation. 24 teams from across the globe are represented in the Wheelchair Softball World Series.

The softball is larger than a regular softball to allow the Adaptive Athlete to maneuver the sports wheelchair effectively.

Edward Gonzales, Adam’s teammate encourages others that are confined to a wheelchair to come out and become Adaptive Athlete.

Westminster Presbyterian Church Food Box Distribution Event

 

Odessa, Texas/July 30, 2023-On Saturday, July 29th, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Odessa held its monthly food distribution event. Cars began lining up at 7:30am from the Church’s west parking lot around Tanglewood street. Westminster Presbyterian Church provides this service to those in need within the city and county.

The food distribution event is scheduled on the last Saturday of the month with the exception for Thanksgiving and Christmas, food boxes are given out prior to the holidays. The boxes are loaded up on Thursday prior to the event.

Westminster Presbyterian Church members and volunteers from across the community that included a former University president, educators and employees from the local school district came out to help with the food box distribution event.

Odessa Chamber of Commerce Hosts UT AUSTIN-Home To Texas Internship Program

Odessa, Texas/July 28, 2023-The Odessa Chamber of Commerce hosted HOME TO TEXAS, an internship program created by the University of Texas at Austin was held at the Odessa Marriott. The fulltime internship program began in 2019 and is designed to bring young UTA students back to their communities.

Savannah Muñiz has a passion for science and is a 2d year Biochemistry and 2nd year Sophomore student at UT Austin and plans to go to medical school and seek a career in Oncology. Savannah is an intern through the HOME TO TEXAS program at the Odessa Marriott.
