Odessa Fire Rescue Respond to House Fire Other Homes Impacted

Odessa, Texas/August 24, 2024-On Saturday, August 24th, during the afternoon hours, Odessa Fire Rescue responded to a house fire in the 4200 Block of Wayside Ave., across from Permian High School on East 42nd Street. Residents near and around the burning home were able to knock down the front door in an effort to rescue anyone in the house. A medium size dog was pulled out of the burning home.

Neighbors to the right and left of the burning house suffered some fire damage to their homes and property.

No injuries were reported. A representative with the American Red Cross was at the scene to provide assistance to the victims of the house fire. Odessa Fire Rescue officials are investigating the cause of the fire.

Odessa Family YMCA’s 2nd Annual “Pulling For Our Cause” Clay Shoot Fundraiser

Odessa, Texas/August 24, 2024-The Odessa Family YMCA is holding its 2nd Annual Pulling for Our Cause. The Glay Shoot Fundraiser is set for Friday, August 30th from 8am to 2pm at Jake’s Clays in Midland.

NTSB and the FAA Investigating a Plane Crash in North Odessa Near Schlemeyer Airfield

Odessa, Texas/August 20, 2024-On Tuesday, August 20th at approximately 7am Odessa Fire Rescue responded to a major fire within the 6800 block Alderfer Ave. A small plane that took off from Schlemeyer Field was flying southbound at a low altitude over Yukon Rd., hit power lines on Yukon Rd., and also hitting and damaging a business also on Yukon Rd. The plane went down in the ally in the area of Alderfer Ave and Stevens Ave. Several trailer homes were fully engulfed. OFR rescued a female from a burning trailer home and was transported to a local hospital. 

The aircraft, a 1991 Cessna 550 piloted by Joseph Vincent Summa, a 48 years of age male of Bellaire, Texas. The passenger identified as Joleen Cavaretta Weatherly, a 49 years of age female of Orange, Texas were both pronounced deceased at the scene. The NTSB and the FAA were notified and have begun their investigation. More information as it becomes available.

Ector County Republican Women-“Back to Club Fun Night”

Odessa, Texas/August 19, 2024-The Ector County Republican Womens club held a special outdoor event that was open to the public called “Back to Club Fun Night” Ector County Republican Party Chair along with Precinct Chairs provided hamburgers, chips and drinks to guests.  

Members and guests interacted with State Senator Kevin Sparks and with special guest speaker Dr. Richard Bartlett MD.

Scott Muri Retires as Ector County ISD Superintendent of Schools

Odessa, Texas/August 16, 2024-On Tuesday, August 13th, the Ector County ISD School Board held a special meeting to officially accept the retirement of Dr. Scott Muri, Superintendent of Schools at Ector County ISD during an executive session.

Delma Abalos, ECISD School Board member hopes to find a new superintendent that will be an advocate for school district students as well as connecting with the local community like Dr. Scott Muri did in the five years as Superintendent of Schools.

Dr. Scott Muri had started his 37th year in education and has decided to make a change in his career path.

During the executive session of the ECISD Special Meeting the school board voted to name Dr. Keeley Boyer, Chief of Schools as the Interim-Superintendent of Schools at ECISD.

First Week of School at Ector County ISD

Odessa, Texas/August 16, 2024-Ector County ISD started the first day of school this week. Pre-K through 12th grade began the school year meeting new teachers and students and reconnecting with their friends at the secondary level.

Gale Pond Alamo was a magnet school and a STEM learning school, this year Alamo Elementary is part of the NEW TECH Network, which will be a feeder school to NEW TECH at the secondary and high school level.

In 2023, the school district along with Gale Pond Alamo explored the advantages of the New Tech Netwok. Teachers prepared for project-based learning for the 2023-2025 school year.

Dr. Scott Muri, acknowledged that he would be retiring from ECISD and the formal announcement would be made during a special meeting of the Ector County ISD School Board.
