Black Cultural Council of Odessa Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr

Odessa, Texas/January 15, 2024-The Black Cultural Council of Odessa hosted and celebrated the birthday of Civil rights icon Martin Luther King, Jr. The January 15th celebration included a community brunch at the Woodson Community Center at Woodson Park in southeast Odessa.

Young students from the STEM Academy located at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin presented posters the students created in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Residents gathered at the Salvador Guerrero Senior Activity Center and begin the traditional march starting on south Dixie Blvd to East Murphy Street to the Woodson Community Center in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Followed by cultural activities.

Odessa City Council Provides ARPA Funds to Medical Center Health System

During the Tuesday, January 9th City Council meeting the council provided Medical Health System one million dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 known as ARPA. The funds will go to the hospital’s foundation and distributed to the Permian Basin Behavioral Health Center in Midland.

Mental health is currently being provided by local jails and local hospital ER departments.

The Odessa City Council also provided funding through ARPA to the Medical Center Health System to bring diabetes awareness. and education to sub low-income residents.

Medical Center Health System will reopen one of its facilities located on 42nd Street between Grandview and Dawn to provide diabetes care for sub low-income residents.

Odessa, Texas/January 11, 2024-The Odessa Family YMCA staff and administrations along with several Y members and invited guests held a special luncheon and fundraiser to help a longtime YMCA trainer.

Judie Porras, a Personal Trainer, who has been with the Odessa Family YMCA for many years is donating her kidney to her husband Javier Aguirre after doctors in the ER revealed kidney failure.

The Odessa Family YMCA will be selling T-shirts and accepting donations for Judie Porras and Javier Aguirre to help with medical costs.

Work for a Cause Not Applause Community Event-Praise and Worship Christmas Concert

Odessa, Texas/December 23, 2023-Mayor Javier Joven and the City of Odessa recently held an event called WORK FOR A CAUSE, NOT APPLAUSE. Residents came out to the former Hollywood Theatre location inside Music City Mall to meet Officers with the Odessa Police Department and Odessa Fire Rescue. Several non-profit and faith-based non-profit organizations were part of the event, providing information of community services offered.

A praise and worship Christmas concert was also held near the Carousel area of Music City Mall.

Ector County ISD Police Department Annual Blue Santa Event

Odessa, Texas/December 21, 2023-Ector County ISD recently held their annual Blue Santa event. Gifts were purchased and collected around the beginning of the Holiday Season just after Thanksgiving. Several families were selected by the ECISD Outreach Center.

Donna Kelm ECRW Club President Running for Ector County Republican Chair

Odessa, Texas/December17,2023-Donna Kelm, President of the Ector County Republican Womens Club announced her candidacy for Ector County Republican Chair now that she has acquired the needed 10% of the precinct chairs signatures to be eligible to run.

If elected as the new Ector County Republican Chair, Donna Kelm will be responsible for 38 precincts, which is all of Ector County.

When elected Donna Kelm plans to reach out to the Secretary of State of Texas to make sure that all information regarding Precinct Chairs in Ector County is updated.
